A restricted fishing area as a tool for fisheries management: Example of the Capbreton canyon, southern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Sanchez, Florence; Morandeau, Gilles; Bru, Noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are generally considered as one of the most important tools, among the many regulations, designed to preserve marine resources as well as enhance fisheries. In the southern Bay of Biscay, local French fishermen requested creation of a restricted area to help settle disputes between the various métiers operating there. This restricted area, which lies mainly in French waters, covers part of a deep submarine canyon off the French and Spanish coasts, known to have a large population of mature hake. This study aims to better understand the effects of a restricted area upon French fleets operating there, particularly upon three main métiers – longliners, gillnetters and trawlers. The study area includes three ICES statistical...

De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Mahias, Jeremy; Bru, Noelle; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
A spatial sampling was carried out for stock assessment of sea urchin P. lividus throughout the Basque coast. A sampling, over the year, was conducted to study the reproductive cycle. This work took place over 2013 and 2014. Reproduction occurs once in spring, between May and August 2014. Among factors affecting the release of eggs, salinity, temperature and hydrodynamics show a significant inter-annual variability in the Basque coast. Thus, the period set in 2014, may fluctuate between years. For the stock, the results showed that 11.85 (+/-0.32) million individuals of harvestable biomass for 724 tones (+/- 137). Stock is spread over the entire surveyed area density and biomass decrease rapidly with depth, individuals are mainly located between 0 and 5 m....

BIGORNO.
This report presents the results obtained during the BIGORNO project whose main objective is to overcome knowledge gaps on the biocenoses of the southern sub-region "Bay of Biscay" to propose a sampling protocol adapted to biogeographic and environmental specific conditions. A stratified random sampling design considering spatial heterogeneity has been implemented. Biodiversity was considered on 0.1 m²quadrats. These data have revealed the organization of benthic communities and the relevant taxa to be considered (species or assemblages of indicator species) in the context of establishing perennial monitoring of intertidal habitats. Proposals are made to implement the descriptors and indicators defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

BIGORNO Project. Intertidal biodiversity in the south of Bay of Biscay new research tools in a context of implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Huguenin, Laura; Marticorena, Julien; Lalanne, Yann; Bru, Noelle; Liquet, Benoît; Lissardy, Muriel; D'Amico, Franck; Castege, Iker; Milon, Emilie.
Biodiversity conservation and response of benthic communities to pressures, related to global change and human activities, are a research priority. They also constitute a useful indicator to define the environmental status of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive as part of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). The biogeographic features of the Aquitanian coast (in terms of rocky substrate communities) induce the interest to have a monitoring and research site. Indeed, it includes the habitat characteristics as well as fauna and flora (the Habitats Directive). The aim of the BIGORNO project is to implement new tools to assess the rocky biocenosis in the southern marine subregion of the Bay of Biscay by integrating fauna communities assessment...

Daily and seasonal estimates of the recruitment and biomass of glass eels runs (Anguilla anguilla) and exploitation rates in the Adour open estuary (Southwestern France) ArchiMer
Bru, Noelle; Prouzet, Patrick; Lejeune, Michel.
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is drastically declining in all its distribution area and listed in the red list of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). A rebuilding plan was adopted at European level in 2007, Regulation R(CE) 100/2007, to restore eel abundance to the level observed during the seventies. Its implementation started on the 1(st) of January 2009. This species is heavily threatened by numerous activities including fishing, and its management can only be effective through a systemic approach minimizing the whole range of human-induced impacts on the resource and its habitat. In the framework of the European interregional programme INTERREG IIIB-Atlantic Area-the INDICANG project aimed at elaborating abundance...

Does spatial distribution of fauna depend on algal belts on intertidal boulder fields of the French Basque coast ? ArchiMer
Marticorena, Julien; Huguenin, Laura; Lalanne, Yann; Bru, Noelle; Liquet, Benoît; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
To determine good ecological status and conservation of the Sub-Marine area of the Bay of Biscay, the implementation of a new rocky intertidal habitats monitoring is needed. A protocol has been adapted from the Brittany protocol for the water body FRFC11 "Basque coast" for the two indicators "intertidal macroalgae" and "subtidal macroalgae" under the Water Framework Directive to qualify the ecological. However no protocol has been validated for fauna in front of meridional characters of the benthic communities. Investigations carried out on macroalgae communities on intertidal area in WFD framework, since 2008, constitute an important working basis. This is the aim of the Bigorno project (Intertidal Biodiversity of the south of the Bay of Biscay and...

Morphological Trends of Four Manila Clam Populations (Venerupis philippinarum) on the French Atlantic Coast: Identified Spatial Patterns and Their Relationship to Environmental Variability ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Barranger, Melanie; Gallon, Laurent; D'Amico, Franck.
For species' dynamics highly influenced by environmental conditions, sustainable management for conservation and/or exploitation purposes requires the ability to segregate natural processes from anthropogenic impacts. In this context, identification of phenotypic variations in morphological patterns, and clarification of the mechanisms involved, constitute useful tools to identify adequate management measures from Europe-wide to local conditions. Although such approaches are already used effectively in the management of fish stocks, they are more recent for bivalve stocks, which are also good candidates for such management tools. The current study examines morphological patterns in the Manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum) through morphometric studies of 4...

Optimization of a survey using spatially balanced sampling: a single-year application of clam monitoring in the Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Kermorvant, Claire; Caill-milly, Nathalie; D'Amico, Frank; Bru, Noelle; Sanchez, Florence; Lissardy, Muriel; Brown, Jennifer.
Bivalves are important components of benthic marine and freshwater ecosystems throughout the world. One of the most exploited bivalves used for human consumption is manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum). In Arcachon Bay (SW France), commercial fishers and scientists have developed a monitoring survey to estimate clam stocks to assist in implementing a sustainable management strategy. The survey design that is currently used is based on standard stratified random sampling (StRS). The survey has been undertaken every 2 years since 2006. Each survey costs approximately (sic) 50 000, with funding provided by similar to 20% of the commercial fishers. The survey is quite expensive, given that this resource is managed mostly at a regional level. In 2016 for...

Reference fleets identification by LPUE data filtering applied to the striped red mullet (Mullus surmulletus) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noelle; Dutertre, Marie-adèle; Saguet, Cassandre.
The striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) is a species for which ICES advances individualization of stocks in Western Europe. One of them concerns the Bay of Biscay, the waters bordering the Iberian Peninsula as well as the Celtic Sea, namely striped red mullet in Subareas and Divisions 6, 7a-c, e-k, 8, and 9a (Mur. 27.67a it-k89a). This stock is part of the Data Limited Stocks (DLS) and is currently classified in Category 5 (ICES, 2016); it is a stock for which only landings data are available. Such knowledge is insufficient to apply the ICES MSY approach and the advice rule on fishing possibilities is therefore based on the precautionary approach. For this stock, this approach is applied since 2012. For 2013 and 2014, ICES has recommended reducing...

ROMELIGO. Amélioration des connaissances halieutiques du ROuget-barbet, du MErlan et du LIeu jaune du GOlfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noelle; Dutertre, Marie-adele; Saguet, Cassandre.
The stocks of whiting (Merlangius merlangus), pollack (Pollachius pollachius) and striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), are considered by ICES as Data Limited Stocks (DLS) for the Bay of Biscay areas, those bordering the Iberian Peninsula as well as the Celtic Sea for red mullet. In the case of insufficient data for an analytical assessment, ICES has recommended, for 2013 and 2014, to precautionarily reduce landings by 20 % compared to the period 2009-2011 for these 3 stocks. In order to improve knowledge to fill the gaps in the status of these stocks, and to extract them from the DLS category, the ROMELIGO project has: i) analyzed available data on both catches and professional fishing activity, Captures per Unit of Effort (CPUE) to identify reference...

Shell Shape Analysis and Spatial Allometry Patterns of Manila Clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in a Mesotidal Coastal Lagoon ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Mahe, Kelig; Borie, Catherine; D'Amico, Franck.
While gradual allometric changes of shells are intrinsically driven by genotype, morphometrical shifts can also be modulated by local environmental conditions. Consequently the common use of a unique dimension (usually length) to assess bivalves’ growth may mask phenotypic differences in valve shape among populations. A morphometric exhaustive study was conducted on Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, by acquiring data in the French Arcachon Bay (intrasite phenotypic variability) and by comparing with other sites in the literature (intersite phenotypic variability). 2070 shells were subsampled, weighted, and automatically measured using TNPC software. Some ratios’ values indicate a relatively round and globular shape shell in comparison with other sites...

Tests and jaws’ morphological patterns of regular sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) in relation to environmental conditions ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Mahias, Jérémy; Bru, Noelle; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Pigot, Thierry; Corbet, Paul.
This paper investigates whether morphological variability of test and Aristotle’s lantern can be detected in sea urchins exposed to domestic pollution and whether this variability can be also related to tidal level and hydrodynamic features. The study was conducted on four sites along the French Basque coast. Each site is characterized by its geological layers’ orientation, regardless of its proximity to sewage outlets. Analyses on high-resolution pictures of jaws were performed and three parameters were retained: length, height and demipyramid dry mass. Five shape descriptors were consequently defined regarding the test and the jaws. Individuals with heavy test density associated with highly developed demipyramid regarding test diameter and height were...

The Manila clam population in Arcachon Bay (SW France): Can it be kept sustainable? ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Gam, Meriame; Paroissin, Christian; Bru, Noelle; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
The venerid clam Ruditapes philippinarum is the most prominent suspension-feeding bivalve inhabiting muddy intertidal seagrass beds in Arcachon Bay (SW France). It is exploited by fishermen, and Arcachon Bay ranks number one in France in terms of production and total biomass of this species. Previous studies revealed a decrease in the standing stock of R. philippinarum since 2003 and unbalanced length-frequency distributions with a lack of juveniles and of adults >40 mm. Consequently, the population dynamics of this bivalve were studied at four intertidal sites and one oceanic site in Arcachon Bay. As clam size structure did not allow classical dynamics computations. field monitoring was coupled with field experiments (tagging-recapture) over two years....

Tidal level influence on the spawning process of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) on a rocky shore (Bay of Biscay). ArchiMer

The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is an important exploited resource on the Mediterranean coast and has been the subject of much research. In the Bay of Biscay, the situation is different, as some studies have been conducted on the Spanish Basque coast but few on the French part of that coast. However, the Basque coast offers favourable conditions for the development of this species, and its exploitation could be a source of potential diversification for fishermen, especially in the context of difficulties with some other resources. At the request of the managers of this coastal resource, a study was undertaken on sea urchins to improve knowledge of this stock, particularly about its biological characteristics. In this work, assessment consisted of...

Update of pollack abundance indices from professional fishing data (2016-2018) ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noelle.
The ROMELIGO project included a proposal of abundance indicators for pol-89a stock using professional fishing data. The methodolgy is based on the selection of a sample of representative vessels grouped in a cluster with the same technical characteristics, taking into account their LPUE for specifed period and area. The analysis was conducted on an historical dataset from 2005 to 2015. To be able to update it, a conditional decision tree was used to find rules to assign any new vessels to one of the predefined GNS clusters. Then, the trends of LPUE on the overall period were considered: for the past three years, the LPUEs display low levels compared to the whole series while the highest levels were observed between 2011 and 2015. Why do fishermen discard? Distribution and quantification of the causes of discards in the Southern Bay of Biscay passive gear fisheries. ArchiMer
Morandeau, Gilles; Macher, Claire; Sanchez, Florence; Bru, Noelle; Fauconnet, Laurence; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
In the context of the Common Fisheries Policy reform, the need for decreasing discards has been highlighted in discussions on the implementation of a discard ban. While most of the research has focused on the quantification of discards by species and métier, identification and quantification of the causes of discards have received little attention. This study presents the results of on-board surveys conducted in the Southern Bay of Biscay fleets of netters and longliners. A large variability of discards was observed. It is also shown that in these passive gear fisheries the main reasons for discarding put forward by fishermen are, firstly, market-related and, secondly, quality-related; discards related to the application of regulations are minor. The...
